Alcoholism

Over the course of our lives, most of us have had a brush with alcoholism, be it a personal experience or watching a friend or family member tumble down a long flight of liquor-soaked stairs because of alcoholism. We may not have acknowledged it or even realized it, and that’s one of the factors that makes alcoholism such a scary thing. Alcoholism is a disease of denial.

Alcoholism is characterized by a physical and mental addiction to alcohol. Alcoholism is a dependency so severe that a person’s ability to control how much alcohol they intake or how much damage that intake is causing is seriously impaired.

Alcoholism is all too often thought of as a simple weakness or character flaw, alcoholism is actually a chronic and progressive disease that, if left untreated, has the potential to cause serious bodily harm, even death.

But the repercussions of alcoholism extend far beyond cirrhosis of the liver or broken blood vessels. On the long list of diseases like colon cancer, alcoholism stands out as one of the few non-contagious diseases that negatively affects the people around the patient almost as much as the patient himself.

Alcoholism can wreak mental, emotional, and economic havoc while destroying families, friendships, and work relationships.

Not enough is known about the actual biological causes of alcoholism. It has been shown that while there is a genetic predisposition to alcoholism in some people, emotional, mental, and environmental factors also play a role. Using alcohol as a coping mechanism or stress reliever is a risky behaviour because nearly anyone is susceptible to alcoholism.
