On the long list of diseases like colon cancer, alcoholism stands out as one of the few non-contagious diseases that negatively affects the people around the patient almost as much as the patient himself.
Alcoholism can wreak mental, emotional, and economic havoc while destroying families, friendships, and work relationships.
Not enough is known about the actual biological causes of alcoholism. It has been shown that while there is a genetic predisposition to alcoholism in some people, emotional, mental, and environmental factors also play a role. Using alcohol as a coping mechanism or stress reliever is a risky behaviour because nearly anyone is susceptible to alcoholism.
